Society likes to joke about how our moms and grandmas have to pop a few Ambien with their evening glass of wine in order to get a good night’s sleep. Beneath the sarcasm, what we don’t learn is that circadian rhythms and melatonin production do deteriorate with age.

Melatonin, “the sleep hormone”, is produced in the pineal gland inside the brain’s epithalamus. It regulates sleep stages (think REM vs deep sleep) as well as circadian rhythms. Even if you wouldn’t consider yourself ‘aging’, maybe you work night shift, you’re required to travel often for work or competition, or you simply aren’t a great sleeper. Skip the Ambien (which requires a prescription and has harmful side effects) and alcohol. Instead pick up Melaton-3.
